  • If you are looking to create a website, you must first decide what your website is going to be about. Hopefully you know this by now and hopefully you’re knowledgeable in the subject at hand. The second thing to consider is who is going to write your website, the code. You can either choose to do it yourself, if you’re HTML knowledge is sufficient or you can hire someone to do it. You might even be able to create a free website using one of the many online website building tools out there. These are ideal if you don’t have a budget to hire a professional web designer or don’t know the necessary knowledge yourself.

The next thing to consider is where to host your website. Will you be using a free provider, hosting it on your web space that comes with your Internet Service Provider or will you be taking out a hosting plan with one of the many web hosting firms out there? Either is a viable option and all will provide sufficient hosting for your site.

Finally, you must think about how you’re going to get people to visit your website. There is no point having a website if nobody is able to find it after all. You might want to choose to promote the website yourself via word of mouth, chat, forums or you might want to hire an SEO professional to assist you.

  • A VPS or Virtual Private Server is a fantastic alternative for those Webmasters who need the extra programs and features that come with a dedicated server but don’t have the budget to lease a dedicated server from month to month. A VPS hosting offers all of the elements you can expect to find on a dedicated server such as control panels, shell access and the standard features you’d find on shared hosting. A VPS will typically cost less than half of that of a dedicated server, which is a huge draw for Webmasters working to a budget.

A typical VPS performs in the exact same way as a dedicated server. You’d have access to a full control panel for which to administer your websites and would also have shell/command line access to perform more complex server functions. By having such access privileges, you can also customise your server to suit your needs by installing and maintaining your own applications. A VPS will give you the complete freedom that most shared or reseller hosting accounts can’t give you.

Performance wise, a VPS can perform just as well as a dedicated server. That when coupled with the cost and options available make it one of the more popular choices in web hosting.

  • Windows or Linux?

After reading many web hosting reviews over the past few months, I’ve found that one question gets asked more than any other. What’s the best platform to host your website on? Windows or the ever popular Linux operating system? Whilst there is a lot of discussion on this on a regular basis, nobody can give a clean cut answer. I guess it comes down to personal preference. Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong with a Linux based web host. Purely from the reliability factor. Having operating both Windows and Linux on a desktop, end user level, I have much more confidence in the latter being able to keep my website active with Windows cannot. Not only that, the best web hosting control panel(s) on the market currently, WHM / cPanel both operate in a Linux environment which is another huge draw.

Of course, there are those Webmasters out there who code in ASP and require other Windows based applications in order for their sites to function - so they’re pretty much stuck with the Windows systems and the control panels they offer.

Whether you’re looking for Linux hosting or Windows hosting, you can be sure to find options in abundance. A good place to start is by perusing a web hosting directory - You are sure to find hosts to match your every requirement here. There are also many review websites out there with reviews of popular firms such as FatCow should you not find what you’re looking for.
